Judy Faulkner: ‘We have to be the wizards’ to advance EHRs

Epic CEO Judy Faulkner, clad in a burgundy and gold wizard robe and hat, delivered her executive address before a crowd of nearly 13,000 at Epic’s annual Users Group Meeting Sept. 26, reports The Cap Times.

This year’s fall conference was themed “World of Wizards” and featured horse carriage rides, volleyball games and a cappella performances.

In her address, Ms. Faulkner praised users of Epic’s platform. She highlighted how Epic helps healthcare organizations reduce patient wait times, deploy telemedicine services and share patient data, especially through tools like its interoperability service Share Everywhere, which rolls out in November.

“I’m always in awe of what you do,” she told the crowd, according to The Cap Times. “I wish there was magic, so we could just wave the wand … but we have to be the wizards.”

She added that now, Epic is seeking to “go beyond the traditional walls” of the EHR. Healthcare providers must incorporate as much data as possible, including genomics, geography and mood — which she referred to as a “comprehensive medical record,” or “CMR.” Ms. Faulkner specifically urged U.S. organizations to invest more in social spending on healthcare.

“Others spend more on social care, and end up with healthier people,” Ms. Faulkner said. “We won’t be able to afford to continue the way we’re doing it.”
