Integrating genetic testing orders into EHRs saves time, study says

A new study from the Philadelphia-based Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania suggests that clinicians being able to order genetic testing through EHR systems directly saves time.

The study showed that clinicians spent two minutes ordering genetic testing through EHR systems, compared to the eight minutes clinicians averaged ordering genetic testing from an outside third-party portal, according to the Sept. 21 Penn Medicine news release.

The EHR tool created by the Penn Medicine team was used in four genetic testing laboratories and resulted in the creation of 420 computerized genetic testing orders.
