Henry Ford Health System experiences power outage Thursday, knocking out its Epic EMR

Power supplying the data center at the Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System was restored Thursday afternoon after it had been knocked out earlier that morning, affecting multiple computer applications and disrupting the hospital's Epic EMR, hospital spokesman David Olejarz confirmed to Becker's Hospital Review.

By 4 p.m., IT teams resolved the power issue that had affected the EMR, email and some phones since 7:40 a.m. During the outage, employees reverted to standard downtime procedures, which involved taking information down on paper to ensure patient care information was recorded and updated. Patients were seen as scheduled despite some delays.

"We encountered some minor delays in patient care, and complex, non-emergent procedures were delayed until the appropriate applications were restored," Mr. Olejarz said in an emailed statement to Becker's. "We followed up with patients requesting future appointments."

The outage was the result of  an electrical inspection in advance of an upcoming electrical upgrade, Mr. Olejarz added.
