Epic CEO's 2 questions for health system execs

Judy Faulkner, CEO of Epic Systems, has met with health system executives from across the country since founding the company in 1979, pitching the company's EHR and advising on technology trends.

EHR installs are a big commitment for hospitals and health systems, costing millions of dollars and requiring months of preparation.

It's not a decision to make lightly. When asked about the most important aspects to consider when purchasing an EHR, Ms. Faulkner's advice has been consistent throughout the years. She poses two questions, according to her blog Hey Judy:

1. What is in the best interest of your patients?
2. Ten years from now, will you look back and say 'that was a good decision'?

At least in some cases, those questions may have done the trick. KLAS named Epic the top overall health IT software suite vendor for the 14th consecutive year in early February, followed by Meditech and Oracle Health. Epic is also the market leader with 36% of acute care hospitals using its platform, with more slated to join this year.

From 2017 to 2022, Epic gained 434 hospitals and more are transitioning their facilities to Epic this year, including Houston-based Memorial Hermann and Cleveland-based University Hospitals.
