Microsoft says medical AI will be built with governance principles

Satya Nadella, CEO and chair of Microsoft, said its AI technology for healthcare will be developed with "governance and oversight" principles that will ensure "fairness and transparency," The Cap Times reported Aug. 23.

In attendance at Epic Systems' annual Users Group Meeting, Mr. Nadella shared his thoughts on the future of AI in healthcare.

Mr. Nadella said AI technology can help reduce workload, but that humans must always be a part of the process to ensure the content AI produces is accurate.

"The same day that we are excited about what generative AI can do for us, we also have to sort out real world harms," he said. "We've been working at this in real time [developing] institutional strength in making sure that any AI model that we deploy has a real focus on AI safety ... data and data safety, and who owns the data."

Mr. Nadella also said that if used responsibly, AI could cause a "massive paradigm shift."

"Technology for technology's sake is not that interesting," he said. "But technology applied in a meaningful way on some of society's largest, biggest problems and challenges to improve the lives of people out there is going to be the most impactful thing."

Microsoft and its company Nuance have a partnership with Epic Systems. The two companies are working on integrating conversational, ambient and generative AI technologies into Epic's EHR ecosystem.
