St. John Health’s Providence Park Hospital in Novi is set to open in Sept. 2008, and a Henry Ford Health System facility will begin business by March 2009 in West Bloomfield.

Population in the region is stagnant, and Michigan’s Certificate of Need Commission has said that there will be excess capacity of 1,200 inpatient beds in the county after the two new hospitals open, according to the Detroit Free Press story. Oakland County hospitals operated at an average occupancy rate of 66 percent in 2007, with some hospitals operating at 50 percent or worse.
