Google seeks 500+ data, software engineers in race for talent

Google is stocking up on data and software engineers worldwide.

The tech giant has more than 500 job openings for data and software engineers to join its network. The jobs span the U.S. including California, Seattle, Atlanta and more. The company is offering 135 of the software engineer jobs for remote-eligible work.

Microsoft and Amazon both have more than 500 data scientist and engineering jobs open as well. CVS Health has 100 data scientist and engineering jobs open, and a bench of more than 900 data scientists already with the company.

Many hospitals and health systems are building out their data science and engineering teams, but competition for talent is fierce. The average salary for a data engineer in the U.S. is $111,543, according to Salary.com. Salaries range from $96,510 to $127,692, according to the website. Health systems may not be able to offer top dollar salaries for data science and engineer roles, but they do offer a mission-driven culture and teams doing important work.

"IT talent in healthcare is so critical," Michael Pfeffer, MD, CIO of Stanford (Calif.) Health Care, said during an interview for the "Becker's Digital Health + Health IT" podcast. "It's the people that really make all of this happen, not so much the technology, so making sure we have an incredible place to work for our IT professionals is top of mind for me."
