New Hyde Park, N.Y.-based Northwell Health finished retiring Nuvance Health’s brand this spring, when the first Northwell building signs, ID badges and lab coats appeared across the Danbury, Conn.-based system’s hospitals.
The rollout capped a yearlong transition that began in May 2025, the same month the two systems completed a merger that formed a 28-hospital, $22.6 billion organization.
The timeline wasn’t just a function of merger logistics. According to Ramon Soto, Northwell’s senior vice president and chief marketing and communications officer, it was the direct result of research the system conducted before deciding how — and how quickly — to introduce its name into Connecticut and the Hudson Valley.
“Before making any decisions, we conducted research to understand consumer perceptions in both markets,” he told Becker’s. “The findings were compelling: while Nuvance had strong recognition in Connecticut and the Hudson Valley, as expected, many consumers were also aware of Northwell and viewed us favorably, even before the rebrand. We were working from a strong foundation.”
That finding shaped the pace of the rollout. Rather than replace the Nuvance name immediately, Northwell spent time building awareness of its own brand in the new markets before changing physical signage.
“We implemented a one-year transition from May 2025 to May 2026, which let us seed the market and generate genuine excitement about what this means: the resources and innovation of New York’s largest health system, delivered by care teams who know these communities best,” Mr. Soto said.
Northwell opted to layer a systemwide name over preserved local identities rather than erase them.
“Just like our other 21 hospitals, each location maintains its own identity and local roots,” Mr. Soto said. “Think ‘Northwell at Danbury Hospital.’ You get 106,000 team members, cutting-edge research, and nationally recognized specialists, while preserving the community partnerships that matter.”
He also pointed to cultural alignment between the two systems as a factor behind the merger, alongside the market research.
“We found remarkable cultural alignment between our organizations,” he said. “Northwell and Nuvance share a strong sense of purpose and mission, with a common belief that exceptional care starts with putting patients, team members, and communities first.”
Mr. Soto said the response to the spring signage rollout, one of the more visible milestones in the transition, has been positive so far. The remainder of the rebrand will continue over the next year.
“The brand transition creates clarity and consistency for consumers. They are proudly part of Northwell, and they remain deeply rooted in their communities,” he said. “We’re investing heavily to build on that foundation: better care, better access, better experiences. That’s what being part of Northwell means: We raise the entire system together.”
