UT Health Austin (Texas), the clinical practice of the University of Texas at Austin’s Dell Medical School, has been renamed UT Dell Medicine, the Austin American-Statesman reported Oct. 27.
The new name brings the medical school, its clinics and the $5 billion UT Dell Medical Center under construction under one system brand. University of Texas President Jim Davis announced the change last week, and crews installed new signage on the practice’s Trinity Street clinic building Oct. 27.
Dell Medical School Dean Claudia Lucchinetti, MD, described UT Dell Medicine as “the system we are building under one common name.”
The hospital, which UT bills as the nation’s first AI-native hospital, is expected to open in 2030 and reach full build-out in 2035. It will focus on five areas: cancer care in collaboration with Houston-based MD Anderson Cancer Center, cardiovascular, neurology, transplant — with potential for liver and lung transplant care, which Austin lacks — and advanced intensive care.
At full build-out, the hospital and clinics are expected to double the system’s clinical capacity and triple the number of patients UT Dell Medicine sees.
The campus will have its own power plant and three redundant power systems to support the energy demands of AI-driven monitoring, Dr. Lucchinetti said. Michael Ryan, chief administrative officer and CIO of Dell Medical School, said planners are also working to make the EHR and AI tools better integrated, better connected to other health systems and easier to use for patients, caregivers and clinicians.
“This is what academic medicine can do,” Mr. Ryan said.
Michael and Susan Dell have given $1 billion to the university, including support for the new medical center.
