Pittsburgh-based UPMC and Pitt Athletics have announced an expanded multiyear partnership that puts a UPMC patch on Pitt Football jerseys for the first time. The patch marks the first agreement of its kind for the University of Pittsburgh program and will debut Sept. 5 when Pitt hosts Miami (Ohio) at Acrisure Stadium.
The deal, brokered with the help of Pitt’s multimedia rights holder JMI Sports, also names UPMC presenting sponsor of Panther Women’s Sports. That sponsorship includes a women’s health platform built around community health screenings, fairs and awareness campaigns featuring Pitt’s female student-athletes, covering topics such as heart health, mental health and disease prevention.
UPMC will also receive premium signage at Pitt’s new Victory Heights Sports Performance Center and Arena, which opened Aug. 13.
“UPMC is one of the most respected names in healthcare, with a global impact on medicine, research and patient care,” Pitt Director of Athletics C. Allen Greene said in a late August news release. “They’re a pillar in our community and there’s not a brand more ingrained with Pitt Athletics.”
The expansion builds on a UPMC-Pitt relationship dating to 1986, when the late Dr. Freddie Fu founded Pitt’s sports medicine program. UPMC has served as the university’s official healthcare provider since then.
