The University of Michigan Board of Regents has approved dissolving the corporate entity of Sparrow Health System, completing its administrative integration into University of Michigan Health.
The regents voted on the measure at their June 25 meeting. A University of Michigan Health spokesperson confirmed the decision to Becker’s, saying the health system acquired Sparrow Health System in 2023 and, as part of the acquisition, agreed to maintain Sparrow as a separate corporate entity for at least three years.
“Fully merging the entity will better serve our mission of advancing health to serve Michigan and the world,” the spokesperson said. “The transition is administrative and will have no effect on patient care or hospital operations. The move will have no impact on jobs.”
The dissolution also officially retires the Sparrow Health System name. According to the spokesperson, the name has largely not been used since the 2023 acquisition.
The April 2023 merger between University of Michigan Health and Sparrow Health System formed a $7 billion academic system with more than 200 sites of care.
