Chief marketing officer turnover still highest in C-suite: Average tenure slips to 42 months

Chief marketing officers have long held the shortest tenures among C-level executives, and their average time in office just keeps getting shorter, according to a new report from Korn Ferry.

The average tenure of a marketing executive is just 3.5 years, a one-month decline from the 2018 estimate released by executive search from Spencer Stuart last year. That number falls well short of the average 4.9-year tenure across the entire C-suite, according to the Korn Ferry analysis, which was based on surveys of executives at the top 1,000 U.S. companies by revenue.

In healthcare, chief marketing officers stay in their roles for even less time: only 3.4 years, compared to the average healthcare executive team’s tenure of 4.5 years.
