5 ways CIOs can lead digital marketing strategy

As advanced technologies play an increasingly greater role in marketing strategy, the roles of an organization's chief marketing officer is beginning to overlap with that of the CIO.

Here, according to Marketing Tech Outlook magazine, are five ways CIOs can contribute to a successful and transformative digital marketing strategy.

1. Gathering data: By deploying IT tools to accumulate consumer data via the web, mobile and social media, CIOs will be able to draw relevant insights to inform marketing efforts.

2. Focusing on digital content: As operations move almost entirely to digital formats, it falls on the CIO to ensure digital content infrastructure aligns with an organization's long-term strategies, and especially marketing strategy.

3. Effective collaboration: CIOs should build a team of both IT experts and marketing leaders to ensure total alignment between digital efforts and organizational strategy.

4. Building customer relationships: By deploying customer relationship management software and automating other consumer-facing processes, CIOs can contribute to the development of their organizations' crucial relationships with consumers.

5. Creating digital strategies: In order to not only implement but also ensure the success of the aforementioned digital transformations, CIOs should be prepared to spearhead their organizations' overall internal digital strategy, drumming up support and enthusiasm for these and other digital initiatives.
