The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality awarded the medical center a $5 million, five-year grant to fund the center. The grant money will go toward expanding research infrastructure, databases, training programs, personnel and collaborative relationships to help achieve patient-centered outcomes.
UT Southwestern joins seven other institutions that have created similar PCOR centers aimed toward comparing research to improve patient care.
Ethan Halm, MD, chief of the William and Gay Solomon Division of General Internal Medicine and chief of the Division of Outcomes and Health Services Research in the department of clinical sciences, will lead the PCOR center. He said they will mainly focus on underserved populations.
“We chose this focus because patients who are poor, part of minority populations or lack insurance have worse health outcomes, and resource-limited health systems are most in need of strategies to deliver clinically effective and cost-effective care,” he said in the news release.
