Mount Sinai, U at Buffalo, UPMC test brain computer interface tech

Brain-computer interface technology company Synchron announced the completion of patient enrollment for trials at New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System, University at Buffalo (N.Y.) Neurosurgery and Pittsburgh-based UPMC.

The Command trial enrolled six patients and will test the safety and efficacy of the Synchron Switch motor neuroprosthesis in patients with severe paralysis, according to a Sept. 5 Synchron news release.

For the patients who cannot use their hands, the study will assess how brain-computer interface technology will allow them to complete tasks such as emailing, online shopping and telehealth services with their thoughts.

The research is being conducted under an investigational device exemption awarded to the company by the FDA.
