The NLM released a request for information in September on data science research initiatives that address challenges faced by researchers and clinicians in health and biomedicine, including ways to make science more open and reproducible. The RFI also sought stakeholders’ input on trends in workforce development and partnerships.
AMIA noted that the NLM is “uniquely positioned” to encourage data science initiatives and recommended it begin by focusing on the “basic science” of data standards.
It also recommends NLM foster a more open data science research environment through funding efforts that establish trust and assurance in the scientific process and build on its leadership in informatics education and training.
“The future of health and medicine is data,” said AMIA President and CEO Douglas Fridsma, MD, PhD. “As the science of collecting, analyzing, and applying data to health challenges, informatics can be a powerful complement to data science tools and methodology. AMIA views the NLM as a natural home to ensure that both fields evolve towards mutual goals.”
