Yale New Haven (Conn.) Health said that unusual activity affecting its IT systems on March 8 was the result of a data breach.
An investigation into the incident revealed that an unauthorized third party gained access to the health system’s network and obtained copies of certain data, according to a news release from the health system.
The breached information varies by patient, but could include demographic data such as names, dates of birth, addresses, telephone numbers, email addresses, race or ethnicity, as well as Social Security numbers, patient type and/or medical record numbers.
Yale New Haven Health said its electronic health record system was not accessed during the breach and that no financial account or payment information was involved.
The system is mailing breach notification letters to affected patients by April 14.
