Paul Cunningham, former CISO of the VA departed in February. Since his exit, the duties of CISO have been carried out on an acting basis by Lynette Sherrill, enterprise command operations IT leader.

At a House committee hearing in June, VA’s CIO Kurt DelBene said his department was working quickly to appoint a permanent CISO.

This comes after the VA’s OIG highlighted that the VA’s fiscal year 2021 Federal Information Security Modernization Act audit showed “limited progress,” pertaining to the pace at which the department is addressing cybersecurity concerns.
