St. Louis medical center alerts 152,000 patients of data breach

Employees at St. Louis-based Betty Jean Kerr People's Health Centers have been unable to access computer networks after a ransomware attack in September.

The health system recently began notifying patients about the incident. Around 152,000 patients may have had their information viewed because of the ransomware attack, local CBS affiliate KRCG reports. People's has refused to pay the ransom and is working with a forensic information technology firm to regain control of its data.

Patient data that may have been viewed dates back to 2011. The hackers had access to patient names, dates of birth, addresses, Social Security numbers, clinical data, pharmacy data, insurance information and dental X-rays. No medical records were compromised.

People's recommends patients monitor their account statements. The medical center is also offering affected patients free credit monitoring services.
