Report: Healthcare No. 1 industry hit by ransomware, W-2 scams in 2017

The industry hit most frequently with a variety of cyberattacks in 2017 was the healthcare sector, according to a Feb. 20 report released by Beazley.

For the report, Beazley — a London, U.K.-based cybersecurity insurance company with offices in Asia, Australia, South America, the Middle East and the United States — analyzed the roughly 2,500 data breaches that affected its clients during 2017.

Here are the top industries hit by ransomware in 2017, according to Beasley.

1. Healthcare: 45 percent of cross-industry ransomware incidents

2. Finance: 12 percent

2. Professional services: 12 percent

4. Manufacturing: 7 percent

5. Education: 6 percent

5. Retail: 6 percent

Here are the top industries hit by W-2 email phishing scams in 2017, according to Beasley.

1. Healthcare: 28 percent

2. Education: 18 percent

3. Retail: 15 percent

4. Professional services: 13 percent

5. Hospitality: 7 percent

5. Manufacturing: 7 percent
