Patient files lawsuit against Norton Healthcare over cyber event

A patient and a former employee of Louisville, Ky.-based Norton Healthcare filed a lawsuit against the health system after it experienced a cyber event that may have compromised individuals' protected health information, ABC affiliate WHAS reported July 26.

The lawsuit alleges that Norton Healthcare failed to safeguard patients' information. The plaintiffs allege that information such as names, addresses, birthdays, Social Security numbers and financial information was stolen during the May 9 incident.

The individuals are seeking compensatory damages and 10 years of credit monitoring for all affected.

"We intend to vigorously defend ourselves in any litigation associated with the cyber event we experienced earlier this year," the health system told the news outlet. "However, it is our practice not to comment on any pending litigation.".
