Syracuse, N.Y.-based Upstate Medical University had to temporarily divert some emergency room patients, cancel appointments and suspend visitations after a network outage.
After phone and internet disruptions April 8, the health system canceled the services at Upstate University Hospital, Upstate Community Hospital and all ambulatory locations, according to Facebook updates.
The health system started allowing visitation and all ambulances again later in the day and got back on track with appointments April 9 after getting its systems back online.
“Upstate and its vendors are looking into the root cause, but the issues were technical in nature and not related to cybersecurity,” a health system spokesperson told Becker’s. On April 8, “Upstate initiated incident command, and leaders and managers met throughout the day. The computer network was restored in under two hours. The phone system was brought back by the vendor in stages with full functionality restored around 8 p.m.”
