Iowa MSO employee accidentally sends 11,581 patients' info to healthcare provider

Iowa Total Care, a health plan, reported a data breach that affected thousands of individuals.

On June 23, the health plan reported to HHS an email incident that affected 11,581 individuals.

Iowa Total Care is a managed care organization and a subsidiary of Centene. The health plan provides regional and community-based healthcare coverage and resources for members. According to HIPAA Journal, an employee sent an Excel spreadsheet to another provider organization with claims data and protected health information for patients who the organization didn't serve.

The PHI included birth dates, procedures and Medicaid ID numbers. The provider that received the spreadsheet deleted it without sharing or copying it.
