Hacking, IT incidents caused most August data breaches

The most commonly cited reason for a data breach in August was either a hacking or IT incident, according to the HIPAA Journal.

Within August, 32 of the 49 data breaches at healthcare organizations were associated with hacking and IT incidents. These types of incidents affected 602,663 patient records.

Below is a break down of the causes of data breaches:

  • Hacking/IT incident: 32
  • Unauthorized access/disclosure: 12
  • Loss: 3
  • Theft: 2
