Hackers break into Wisconsin medical practice's IT network, expose info of 2.4M patients, employees

Manitowoc, Wis.-based Forefront Dermatology recently began notifying patients and employees that their personal information was exposed in a recent cyberattack on the medical practice's IT systems, according to a July 8 news release. 

The medical practice reported the breach to HHS July 8 as affecting 2,413,533 individuals. 

Forefront Dermatology discovered that unauthorized users gained access to its IT network between May 28 and June 4. The hackers then accessed certain files, which contained information related to patients and employees. 

The medical practice identified the attack June 4 and took its network offline to prevent any further intrusion, according to the news release. 

Information exposed by the incident included patient names, addresses, birthdates, account numbers, health insurance plan member ID numbers, medical record numbers and treatment details.
