Fresenius Medical Care confirmed that an unauthorized individual accessed an employee account and copied files containing personal and health information during an August cybersecurity incident.
The company said the unauthorized party accessed the employee account Aug. 18 and viewed and copied certain files. Fresenius detected suspicious activity Aug. 19 and secured the affected account that same day.
On Aug. 28, the company determined that some identifiable personal information had been affected. Its review of the compromised files remains ongoing, according to a Nov. 5 notice.
Information potentially exposed includes names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers, medical record numbers, health insurance information and treatment or other health information.
Fresenius said it has not identified payment card or bank account information in the files reviewed so far. The company has not disclosed how many individuals were affected.
The disclosure provides new details about an incident Fresenius first publicly acknowledged Sept. 22. At the time, the company said unauthorized access had affected a limited number of internal systems but did not specify when the intrusion occurred or whether any information had been accessed or taken.
Fresenius said the incident did not affect medical devices, patient care, manufacturing operations or business continuity.
The company has engaged cybersecurity experts, notified law enforcement and implemented additional security measures.
Once its review is complete, Fresenius plans to send notification letters to affected individuals for whom it has contact information. Those receiving letters will be offered complimentary credit monitoring, fraud consultation and identity theft restoration services.
Fresenius said it has found no evidence that the affected information has been used for identity theft or fraud.
