Middletown, Conn.-based Community Health Center reported a data breach potentially exposing 1 million patients' information.
The federally qualified health center identified unusual activity on its computer system Jan. 2 and contacted experts to investigate and reinforce the security systems. The investigation found a "skilled criminal hacker" accessed the health center's system and removed data, including personal information.
The hacker didn't delete or lock data, and the health center was able to continue with daily operations. The hacker accessed personal information including names, dates, Social Security numbers, and health insurance information.
Community Health Center strengthened its security and added new software to monitor suspicious activity after the attack. The breach affected around 1,060,936 individuals, according to a report from the Maine Attorney General.
