Are ransomware gangs the next competitors for tech talent?

The ransomware gang known as Fin7 is recruiting tech talent under the name Bastion Secure. The professional website claims to sell cybersecurity services, The Wall Street Journal reported Oct. 21.

Three things to know:

  1. Fin7 is believed to have stolen more than 20 million customer records, hacked hundreds of businesses and shut down a U.S. gasoline pipeline, according to U.S. federal prosecutors.

  2. The hacker group is recruiting for tech jobs, including programmers, system administrators and people who are good at finding bugs in software, according to cybersecurity intelligence firm Recorded Future and Microsoft. The company offers nine-hour workdays, a Monday through Friday schedule and lunch breaks.

  3. The company's attempt to dupe prospective employees into thinking it's a legitimate company represents ransomware groups' determination to rapidly expand, according to the report. The gangs make hundreds of millions of dollars in illegal earnings from their attacks on hospitals and other businesses. Since their operations are becoming expansive, the gangs need support staff and even media representatives, the Journal reported.
