The frequency and complexity of cyberthreats will increase this year, according to a report released by cybersecurity firm Mandiant.

Here are 14 other cybersecurity predictions for the year, according to the report:

  1. Ransomware attacks will increase, and hackers will expand their tactics.

  2. Conflicts will increase among the multiple hackers usually involved in ransomware attacks.

  3. Organizations will get caught between the demands of hackers and the U.S. government.

  4. Operational technology will face more ransomware threats.

  5. The public will be made aware of more breaches in the Asia-Pacific and Japan region.

  6. Russia-based hackers will remain a major ransomware threat.

  7. China-based hackers will remain a major ransomware threat.

  8. Iran-based hackers will deploy more aggressive threats.

  9. North Korea-based hackers will take more risks.

  10. Unrest in Afghanistan will lead to more cyber espionage and information operations.

  11. Hackers will scale up their use of deep fakes to bypass multifactor authentication.

  12. Cyber outsourcing will increase cyberthreats.

  13. The cloud and third parties will create new vulnerabilities.

  14. The growth of Internet of Things devices will lead to new vulnerabilities and cyberattacks.
