Starting pay for 14 physician specialties

Orthopedic surgeons are offered the highest average base salary among physicians and rheumatologists are offered the lowest, according to AMN Healthcare’s “2023 Review of Physician and Advanced Practitioner Recruiting Incentives,” released in August.

The following figures are the average base salaries offered for 14 physician specialties, in descending order, according to the report: 

Note: The report is based on a representative sample of the 2,676 permanent physician and advanced practitioner search engagements AMN Healthcare had ongoing or was engaged to conduct between April 1, 2022, and March 31, 2023. The numbers below represent the average base only and exclude bonuses or other incentives.

1. Orthopedic surgery: $633,000

2. Urology: $540,000

3. Gastroenterology: $506,000

4. Radiology: $472,000

5. Anesthesiology: $450,000

6. Hematology/oncology: $440,000

7. Cardiology (non-invasive): $433,000

8. Dermatology: $427,000

9. Pulmonology/critical care: $418,000

10. Obstetrics/gynecology: $367,000

11. Psychiatry: $355,000

12. Neurology: $354,000

13. Hospitalist: $299,000

14. Rheumatology: $273,000
