Sen. Chuck Grassley Questions Large Salaries of Non-Profit Hospital CEOs

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) recently questioned the salaries of those within the non-profit hospital industry over the weekend, as CEOs within his own state have consistently earned high compensation packages, according to a Des Moines Register report.

Bill Leaver, CEO of Iowa Health System, earned $1.6 million in 2009, and Kirk Norris, president and CEO of the Iowa Hospital Association, made $577,000, according to the report.

Sen. Grassley said his skepticism is heightened because these hospital leaders are making high salaries off charities, according to the report. However, non-profit hospital proponents said executive compensation must be competitive enough with the for-profit industry for executives to run their organizations.
