Maine Bill to Cap Healthcare Executive Salaries Meets Unenthusiastic Response From Lawmakers

A Maine proposal that would limit health executive compensation to the governor’s executive salary received an unenthusiastic response from the Health and Human Services Committee on Wednesday, according to a Sun Journal report.

The bill, sponsored by Rep. Brian Bolduc (D-Auburn), would force facilities to cap hospital administrator total compensation at $70,000. According to the report, Rep. Bolduc’s bill was inspired by a newspaper report that showed hospital executives accepting pay increases while laying off workers and lamenting lower reimbursements.

Some committee members, including Sen. Margaret Craven (D-Androscoggin), suggested the bill was too extreme. She also wondered aloud if the Legislature can dictate salaries for non-profits. The Sun Journal reported that the bill appears to be losing momentum, with no co-sponsors.
