Healthcare’s top 10 billionaires: 2020

Ranked by descending net worth, here are the top 10 healthcare executives on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index as of Jan. 16.

1. Carl Cook, $16.2 billion. Mr. Cook is the owner and CEO of Bloomington, Ind.-based Cook Group, a manufacturer of medical devices.

2. Thomas Frist, MD, $14.2 billion. Dr. Frist controls about 20 percent of Nashville, Tenn.-based HCA Healthcare.

3. Zhong Huijuan, $14.2 billion. Ms. Zhong is the founder and chairman of Hansoh Pharmaceutical Group, the largest maker of psychotropic drugs in China.

4. Sun Piaoyang, $13.3 billion. Mr. Sun is the chairman of Chinese anti-cancer drugmaker Jiangsu Hengrui Medicine.

5. Cen Junda, $10.5 billion. Mr. Cen is a shareholder of Jiangsu Hengrui Medicine and Hansoh Pharmaceutical Group.

6. Li Xiting, $9.9 billion. Mr. Li is the chairman of Shenzhen Mindray Bio-Medical Electronics, a medical equipment-maker in China.

7. Patrick Soon-Shiong, MD, $9.5 billion. Dr. Soon-Shiong became a billionaire after selling APP Pharmaceuticals and Abraxis BioScience. He owns the Los Angeles Times and a 4.5 percent stake in the Los Angeles Lakers professional basketball team.

8. Reinhold Schmieding, $9.2 billion. Mr. Schmieding is the founder and president of Naples, Fla.-based surgical devicemaker Arthrex.

9. Xu Hang, $9.1 billion. Mr. Xu is a co-founder of Shenzhen Mindray Bio-Medical Electronics.

10. Dr. Cyrus Poonawalla, $8.8 billion. Dr. Poonawalla is chairman of one of the world’s largest vaccine-makers: the Serum Institute of India.
