A female employee of CIGNA Health Care has filed a class action lawsuit against the health insurance company citing gender discrimination and seeking no less than $100 million in damages, according to a news release from Sanford Wittels & Heisler, LLP.

Bretta Karp filed the complaint in the U.S. District Court for Massachusetts on behalf of herself and other female employees, alleging CIGNA has a hostile work environment where males and females receive differential treatment. The complaint alleges that CIGNA denies females of promotions and raises and subjects them to disparate terms and conditions of work, harassment and other forms of discrimination.

The complaint seeks certification of two classes — a national class and a State of Massachusetts class comprising current and former female CIGNA employees.

The complaint seeks an award of compensatory, nominal and punitive damages to Ms. Karp and the members of both classes in an amount of not less than $100 million. It also seeks litigation costs, prejudgment interest and ongoing oversight by the Court until requested employment reforms are in place.
