Although the law’s provision has been the subject of legal battles and intense opposition from stakeholders across the healthcare industry, Drs. Miller and Berkowitz say the mandate would strengthen the patient-physician relationship, increase access to health insurance coverage, stabilize insurance premiums and largely eliminate the problem of individuals pushing off insurance until they need healthcare.
The authors also note that by increasing the number of insured individuals, the mandate should reduce the cost of routine healthcare services and help provide financial security from potentially devastating healthcare costs.
