Two weeks ago, Santa Clara County voters approved Measure M — a ballot initiative that would cap the compensation of executives at El Camino Hospital to no more than twice the salary of California’s governor, or roughly $330,000 — by a 51.9 percent to 48.1 percent majority.
John Zoglin, chairman of El Camino’s board, said in the report while board members “have respect for the voters…we are certainly disappointed.” The board will ask attorneys if Measure M is, in fact, legal, although there is no timeframe for when the discussions will occur.
Board members also emphasized that Kary Lynch, an El Camino employee and member of the Service Employees International Union-United Healthcare Workers West, said Measure M was a “bargaining chip” in a local newspaper’s editorial. However, the SEIU-UHW said Mr. Lynch’s statement does not “reflect the current or past position” of the union, according to the report.
