Durham, N.C.-based Duke University and Duke University Health System will raise the minimum wage for eligible employees to $20 per hour, effective July 1.
More than 4,000 employees will receive a direct pay increase under the change, according to a March 4 university news release. In addition, approximately 9,000 employees whose wages are currently near the new minimum will receive an additional wage adjustment tied to tenure and years of service.
Duke said the increase will apply to all regular employees and will extend to contractors who employ individuals working full time on Duke’s campus. Positions covered under collective bargaining agreements will be eligible for the increase subject to union agreements.
The university said its minimum wage has risen from $12 per hour in 2015 to $18 per hour in 2024, representing an increase of more than 50% over the past decade.
