Major issues on the panel’s agenda include how to handle the sustainable growth rate that determines physician Medicare payment rate cuts, how physicians are actually compensated and how aspects of the healthcare reform law such as accountable care organizations and patient-centered medical homes will impact physician pay.
The NCPPR will be chaired by Steven Schroeder, MD, former president of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, and former Sen. Bill Frist, MD, whose grandfather Thomas Frist Sr., MD, was one of the founders of for-profit hospital chain and Nashville, Tenn.-based Hospital Corporation of America. The NCPPR will produce an analysis and full recommendations on its findings at the beginning of 2013.
