Median physician pay per work relative value unit ranges from $41.28 to $90 depending on specialty, according to an Oct. 21 report from Marit.
Marit analyzed 4,456 salary reports on its platform that included wRVU detail as of Oct. 2. The reports span 26 specialties, with at least 30 per specialty.
Marit measures the conversion factor, or the dollar amount a contract pays for each wRVU. Most specialties fall between $48 and $65 per wRVU. Within a single specialty, the difference between a 25th and 75th percentile rate is worth about $94,000 a year at median volume.

Three more findings:
- Hematology oncology pays the highest median rate, but its physicians log a median of 5,658 wRVUs a year, well below the 7,900 median across specialties.
- Ophthalmology ranks lowest on rate, yet its physicians log a median of 9,784 wRVUs a year, the seventh-highest volume of the 26 specialties.
- In a pure productivity contract, a physician logging 8,000 wRVUs earns $480,000 at $60 per wRVU and $416,000 at $52, a $64,000 difference.
