20 highest paid healthcare CEOs of S&P 500 companies

Many of the highest earners among organizations in the Standard & Poor's 500 index are healthcare and pharmaceutical company CEOs, according to a report from the Associated Press and research firm Equilar.

Below is a list of the 20 CEOs in the healthcare field with the highest total compensation in 2015. Total compensation includes information disclosed in company proxy statements, including salary, bonus, stock and options valued at grant date, any deferred compensation, as well as other benefits and perks.

  1. Jeffrey M. Leiden, Vertex Pharmaceuticals (Boston) — $28.09 million
  1. Larry J. Merlo, CVS Health (Woonsocket, R.I.) — $22.86 million
  1. Robert J. Hugin, Celgene (Summit, N.J.) — $22.47 million
  1. Alex Gorsky, Johnson & Johnson (New Brunswick, N.J.) — $21.13 million
  1. Michael F. Neidorff, Centene (St. Louis) — $20.76 million
  1. Alan B. Miller, Universal Health Services (King of Prussia, Pa.) — $20.43 million
  1. Kenneth C. Frazier, Merck & Co. (Kenilworth, N.J.) — $19.89 million
  1. Miles D. White, Abbott Laboratories (Chicago) — $19.41 million
  1. John C. Martin, Gilead Sciences (Foster City, Calif.) — $18.76
