On average, U.S. physicians earn $294,000 per year, according to the Medscape Physician Compensation Report 2017. However, compensation varies widely in accordance with region and state.

The report takes into account responses from 19,200 physicians representing more than 27 specialties.

•    Louisiana: $282,000
•    Hawaii: $277,000
•    New York: $277,000
•    Virginia: $272,000
•    Delaware: $268,000
•    Rhode Island: $261,000
•    New Mexico: $261,000
•    Maryland: $260,000
•    District of Columbia: $235,000
