Fifteen executives from non-profit or government hospitals in Washington made $1 million or more in 2009, raising questions over non-profit tax breaks, according to a KUOW report.

Fourteen executives were from non-profit hospitals and one head of a government hospitals. CEOs from MultiCare Health System in Tacoma, Providence Health & Services in Renton, Virginia Mason Hospital and Medical Center in Seattle and Valley Medical Center in Renton each made more than $2 million.

A spokesperson for the Washington Department of Revenue says the agency may examined whether the non-profits are paying executively excessively or not. The agency can recover back taxes, penalties and interest for the past four years, according to the report.

Several hospital officials said they are in compliance with the state law and their hospital compensation practices were generally comparable to what the highest paid public hospital executives make, according to the report.
