Rutland (Vt.) Regional Medical Center is proposing to cut some of its pediatric beds and move them to the emergency department, WCAX reported Nov. 4.
The proposal, which will need formal state review, is looking to replace the five-bed pediatric section in the women’s and children’s unit with a three-bed pediatric area inside the ED. If approved, the new area would open by summer 2027.
Hospital leaders said the child-only space would have 24/7 access to physicians, labs, imaging, pharmacy and respiratory therapy, according to the report. Leaders said few kids need traditional overnight hospital stays, and most are sent home the same day. Those with more complex care would be stabilized at the hospital, then transferred to another facility.
The proposal is in the process of receiving public comments and a formal state review before the final decision is made.
