The University of Texas Board of Regents recently approved $667 million in new projects for the branch, many of which are intended to update the hospital’s infrastructure. Also included are funds to update facilities not affected by the storm including John Sealy Hospital, the system’s burn unit and the labor and delivery unit.

UTMB also plans an additional $400 million hospital tower to restore the branch’s number of beds to its pre-Ike levels. However, this project will not begin until after John Sealy and its adjacent clinical support center, which will provide sterilization services and other supplies to the branch, are completed.
