Under the potential deal, Shriners Hospitals for Children-Lexington (Ky.) and UK could enter into an agreement for a long-term ground lease for a new $50 million, 100,000-square-foot building. Shriners would fund construction and UK would lease back 50,000 square feet for an ophthalmology clinic, according to the report.
The new building would house two operating suites and clinical and rehabilitation space for pediatric orthopedics. Inpatient operations would be performed at Kentucky Children’s Hospital across the street.
The current Shriners hospital in Lexington has 50 beds, which have become unnecessary as care has shifted from inpatient to outpatient, according to the report. The hospital has had informal discussions with Masonic Homes of Kentucky — a provider of housing, skilled nursing and short- and long-term rehabilitation services for older individuals — for the company to buy the property for a seniors community, according to the report.
