Eastern State Hospital, a 239-bed facility, is scheduled to open this summer and will include inpatient psychiatric treatment, a neuro-behavioral unit, a long-term care unit for individuals with psychiatric disabilities and acute inpatient behavioral health treatment.
The agreement between UK HealthCare and Eastern State Hospital aims to integrate behavioral and physical health services. The agreement is designed to improve quality and patient care, leverage expertise in research and clinical therapies and train behavioral health providers, according to the release. Under the letter of intent, UK will be responsible for a set of outcomes and performance measures, including the number of persons leaving the hospital to return to community living.
UK will use its expertise in psychiatry, psychology, pharmacology, social work, marital and family therapy, public health law and other areas to guide best practices in behavioral health.
Bluegrass Regional Mental Health Board, which has provided leadership and expertise in the operations of the current Eastern State Hospital, will also play a role in the new hospital, according to the release.
