UC San Diego Health and West Health have launched the West Health Accelerator at UC San Diego Health, a six-year, $40 million initiative to help build a new model of reliable and coordinated care that can be shared with systems nationally.
“By 2030, one in five Americans will be aged 65 or older and this demographic shift will dramatically increase the need for easily accessible personalized health care,” UC San Diego Chancellor Pradeep Khosla, said in an Aug. 12 news release shared with Becker’s. “The accelerator will help UC San Diego Health meet local and national demand as it opens new locations across the San Diego region.”
The accelerator will expand UC San Diego Health’s ability to ensure patients receive appropriate care. It will start at UC San Diego Health’s three hospitals and growing clinics network, and will be developed from the ground up to be shared with other systems.
UC San Diego Health and West Health have worked together for over a decade to advance care for an aging population. The two parties opened California’s first accredited senior emergency care unit, the Gary and Mary West Emergency Department at Jacobs Medical Center at UC San Diego Health in La Jolla.
The accelerator will build on work at the Joan & Irwin Jacobs Center for Health Innovation at UC San Diego Health and expand mission control, a 24/7 coordination hub that uses advanced technologies, data and the health system’s electronic health record to help ensure patients are cared for at the right time and in the right setting.
UC San Diego Health is a 1,011-bed academic health system that comprises three hospitals, along with multiple care centers, institutes and pavilions.
West Health is a family of nonprofit and nonpartisan organizations founded by philanthropists Gary and Mary West. It includes the Gary and Mary West Foundation, the Gary and Mary West Health Institute in San Diego and the Gary and Mary West Health Policy Center in Washington, D.C.
