The two-phase project would increase space from 4,000 to 5,000 square feet and would allow the hospital to care for more patients. The hospital currently has 33,000 annual visits to the ED, but it was designed to accommodate 25,000 to 28,000 visits. The new ED will be able to manage 42,000 to 45,000 annual visits. Hospital officials also aim to reduce wait time in the new facility from 20 minutes to 10 minutes.
Phase one of the project will convert the Fast Track area, which is used to treat minor conditions, into a six-bay Rapid Evaluation Unit for patients who are not acutely ill, according to the report. This phase would also restructure the admissions and registration areas.
