Here are total number of hospitals and surgery centers over the past seven years, according to SDI’s 2008 Outpatient Surgery Center Market Report.

  • 2002 — 6,794 hospitals / 3,570 ASCs
  • 2003 — 6,823 hospitals / 3,605 ASCs
  • 2004 — 6,864 hospitals / 3,987 ASCs
  • 2005 — 6,898 hospitals / 4,946 ASCs
  • 2006 — 6,945 hospitals / 5,349 ASCs
  • 2007 — 6,968 hospitals / 5,673 ASCs
  • 2008 — 6,957 hospitals / 5,876 ASCs

While hospital growth has remained relatively flat during this time period, the number of ASCs has grown by close to 65 percent. There were more than 3,200 hospitals than ASCs in 2002; in 2008, that number is less than 1,100.
