Researchers analyzed anonymous network utilization records of 68 workstations in one academic medical center’s ED for 15 consecutive days from 2009 to 2010. The researchers compared time on the site Facebook with ED work index data, which account for patient volume and severity.

Healthcare workers spent a total 72.5 hours and an average 12 minutes per hour — 20 percent of their time — browsing Facebook, according to the study. The time spent on Facebook increased when EDWIN scores increased.
